Girl Child Protection Scheme – Eligibility Criteria | Benefits and Much More!

The Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu started this initiative in 1992. The goal of this strategy is to elevate the position of women in society, safeguard girls, and eliminate female infanticide.

Families that have one or two female children but no male children are eligible for help. To qualify for financial aid from the Tamil Nadu government, a household must fall below the poverty level.

A close examination of the scheme reveals, however, that its implementation is not targeted at districts with a high prevalence of female infanticide, that it assumes only poor families are anti-daughters, and that, given the sterilization condition, families with only daughters and a strong son preference are unlikely to volunteer. It is also unclear to what extent it has changed attitudes regarding daughters, which is one of its goals.
